What to do right now
These four steps limit the damage while you wait. Do them in order, and only as far as you can do them safely.
Step 1
Shut off the water
Find the main shut-off valve — usually where the water line enters the building, often near the water meter in a basement or utility room — and turn it clockwise until it stops. For a single fixture, there is normally a smaller valve underneath it.
Step 2
Keep clear of electricity
If water is near outlets, a breaker panel, or any appliance, do not wade in. Stay out of the area and contact your electricity utility. Water and live electrical equipment are not something to assess yourself.
Step 3
Smell gas? Leave first
If you smell gas or suspect a gas appliance is involved, leave the building before doing anything else and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don’t use light switches or phones indoors.
Step 4
Contain and document
Once the water is off, move valuables clear and take photos of the damage. Your insurer will usually want them, and it costs nothing to have them.

- What should I do if a pipe bursts?
- Shut off the main water supply immediately, then open the lowest taps in the building to drain the remaining water out of the pipes and reduce pressure at the break. Keep clear of any water that has reached outlets or electrical panels. Then call us — a burst pipe is an emergency and shouldn’t wait for business hours.
- Is no hot water an emergency?
- Not always. If there is no hot water but nothing is leaking, it is usually safe to book a normal visit. It becomes an emergency if the water heater is leaking, if you can smell gas near it, or if the tank is making banging or hissing noises — in those cases keep clear and call right away.
- What do I do about sewage backing up into the house?
- Stop running water anywhere in the building, including toilets, taps, washing machines and dishwashers, because everything you drain adds to the backup. Keep people and pets away from the affected area — sewage is a health hazard, not just a mess — and call us. Don’t attempt to clear a main line backup with drain chemicals.
